DavidsTea’s Just Peachy

First Impressions

Spoiler, I’ve had Just Peachy before. It’s one of my favourite summer-time iced teas from DavidsTea and I realize a little while ago that I hadn’t written about it yet for One More Steep so I decide to do so. I first had Just Peachy in-store when it was offered as an iced tea sample (I’ve also had it hot before and I’ll discuss both further below). The dry leaf of Just Peachy has a very strong peach, fruity aroma to it – which is unsurprising considering the ingredients in the blend.

Just Peachy consists of apple, sweet blackberry leaves, peach, natural and artificial flavouring. Of all the ingredients, the one that stands out the most is probably the peach aroma with the hint of apple in the background. If you’re a fan of peach-based iced teas, you might like this one.

Preparation

DavidsTea recommends steeping Just Peachy in near-boiling water for 4 to 7 minutes. I steeped Just Peachy in 93°C (200°F) water for 6 minutes. I tend to be okay with steeping herbal or fruit infusions for a lengthier period of time because, unlike teas, they don’t have the tea leaves in there that can become bitter or astringent when oversteeped.

First Taste

Just Peachy steeps to a pleasant warm orange colour with a strong peach aroma. The flavour of Just Peach is peach and sweet. I find that the fruit ingredients in Just Peachy are enough that I don’t have to add any sweetener to it – of course your mileage may vary with your sweet tooth. The apple is also a very present flavour in this fruit infusion as well, but the flavour of the apple doesn’t overwhelm or overpower the peach, which is nice considering it’s Just Peachy and not Just Apple.

I’ve had Just Peachy both hot and iced. I find when it’s hot, it’s sweeter. When iced, Just Peachy is a nice, refreshing iced tea. I like it both ways, but really prefer to have it iced (especially when the weather’s hot!). I generally cold steep a pitcher of Just Peachy to enjoy throughout the week.

A Second Cup?

I try to resteep Just Peachy, but find that the flavour just isn’t there in comparison to the initial steep. I would say that Just Peachy is good for one steep.

My Overall Impression

I loved DavidsTea’s Just Peachy. Not really much of a surprise considering it’s a fruit infusion blend that I’ve (re)purchased. I really enjoy the fruity flavours of the peach and love the fact that I don’t have to add any extra sugar or sweetener for it to be a sweet iced tea. Just Peachy is definitely one that I recommend having iced (although it’s very tasty as a hot tisane as well).

Metropolitan Tea Company’s Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea

Mint and Honey has provided me with Metropolitan Tea Company’s Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea for the purposes of providing an honest review.

First Impressions

I received a sample packet of Metropolitan Tea Company’s Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea, courtesy of Mint and Honey. The leaves of this organic green tea are a deep green-brown colour, and you can see light twists in the leaves throughout from the drying process. The aroma is very strongly that of jasmine flowers, which is quite pleasant.

Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea is an organic green tea, scented with jasmine. I can’t really make out the aroma of the green tea base, but it is a jasmine tea so I’m not too put off by the fact that I can only smell the jasmine.

Preparation

I wasn’t able to find any recommended steeping instructions. I opted to do an initial steep of Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea at 79°C (175°F) for 1 minute.

First Taste

Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea steeps to a beautiful golden yellow. This green tea has a strong jasmine/floral aroma to it that is quite inviting. On first taste, I found zero bitterness or astringency to it (a reminder, I steeped this tea for 1 minute at 79°C). There’s a mild vegetal note at the tail end of each sip that reminds me of leafy, dark green vegetables, which just a subtle bit of umami mingling throughout.

A Second Cup?

I resteeped Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea a total of four times, adding an extra 30 seconds for each subsequent steep. I found that the flavour stayed fairly consistent, only decreasing a little bit with each steep.

I had also set some aside to have cold/iced and found that the flavour was quite pleasant. I found it to be less floral-sweet when iced.

My Overall Impression

I loved Metropolitan Tea Company’s Jasmine Gold Dragon Organic Green Tea. I found the flavour to be really enjoyable, and the floral sweetness of the jasmine to meet my expectations for a jasmine green tea. The flavour of the green tea base shines through once the leaves are steeped, and it has a nice contrast with the sweetness from the floral with its umami flavour. It’s definitely a tea that you’ll get some good steeps out of it, so be sure to resteep the leaves. Just be careful about oversteeping it, because you don’t want to end up with a bitter cup of tea!

Wize Monkey’s Mango Party

First Impressions

Wize Monkey’s Mango Party came to me in sachet form, as did the rest of their collection. This is actually the last of the coffee leaf teas that Wize Monkey sent me to review – hopefully there will be more flavours being released soon! I was really excited about trying Mango Party because I love tropical fruit and enjoy eating fresh mango – yum.

Mango Party consists of arabica leaves and natural mango flavour. The dry leaf has a very strong mango aroma to it, I can’t smell the arabica coffee leaf base at all although I can certainly see it. I’m not sure where Wize Monkey sourced their natural flavouring from, but it smells amazing I’m really surprised to not find dried mango pieces in Mango Party.

Preparation

Wize Monkey recommends steeping Mango Party in 95°C (203°F) water for as long as you’d like. I did an initial steep of Mango Party for 5 minutes.

First Taste

Mango Party steeps to a deep orange colour. The aroma of Mango Party is still reminding me of mangoes, which is probably a good thing given the name of this coffee leaf tea. The flavour isn’t as mango-full as I would have expected, especially given the aroma. I can taste the coffee leaf base – there’s a nice earthiness to it, some sweetness from the mango, and a touch of mango flavour at the end of each sip. The tisane as a whole has a nice smoothness to it, no bitterness or astringency – something I’ve come to learn that won’t occur with Wize Monkey’s coffee leaf blends.

A Second Cup?

I resteeped Mango Party for seven minutes and found that the resulting cup was primarily that of the coffee leaf base with little mango flavouring throughout. I would say that if you like the coffee leaf base, go ahead with your multiple resteeps.

My Overall Impression

I liked Wize Monkey’s Mango Party. First off, I just want to say that the aroma of the dry leaf is amazing. I just wish that the mango flavour stayed stronger through the steeping process, because a lot of it is present in the aroma but not in the flavour. What I did taste was delicious, and I just wish that there was more of it in the steeped coffee leaf tea. I think either more mango flavouring is needed, or the addition of mango pieces, to really infuse the mango flavouring throughout.
