Dessert by Deb’s Almond Cinnamon Brioche

Almond Cinnamon Brioche by Dessert by Deb
Black Tea / Flavoured
$6.75 for 25g

Almon Cinnamon Brioche came to me as part of the bimonthly subscription box from Dessert by Deb.

First Impressions

Almond Cinnamon Brioche came in a chocolate brown metallic pouch that’s sealed and resealable, with the familiar polka dot label. Almond Cinnamon Brioche is part of Dessert by Deb’s Bed  & Breakfast Holiday Inn collection and the colours have a very end of autumn, beginning of winter feel to it.

Almond Cinnamon Brioche consists of: black tea, natural almond flavour, almonds, cinnamon, coconut, brown sugar, and calendula petals – with quite a few of the listed ingredients being organic. The dry leaf is beautiful – from the sparkle of the brown sugar, the presence of the bright yellow calendula petals and sliced almond pieces. The aroma of Almond Cinnamon Brioche is primarily the coconut, cinnamon, and almonds.

Preparation

Dessert by Deb recommends steeping Almond Cinnamon Brioche in 212°F (100°C) water for 4 to 6 minutes and recommends having it as a tea latte. I did an initial steep for 5 minutes.

First Taste

Almond Cinnamon Brioche steeps to a golden yellow. The aroma is strong of cinnamon and coconut. The flavour is sweet, hints of molasses, warming notes of cinnamon, and the coconut. It has notes of vanilla that somehow come through, which really lend itself to having that ‘brioche’ or thoughts of baked goods. All that’s missing is the aroma of butter to really drive home that idea of brioche to the tastebuds. The black tea base provides a bold undertone with light caramel notes.

I did try adding some evaporated milk to my cup of Almond Cinnamon Brioche, to make it latte-esque. It adds a creamy quality to it, but not that buttery quality that I crave in a good brioche bun.

A Second Cup?

I attempted to resteep Almond Cinnamon Brioche, adding an additional 30 seconds to the steeping time. I found that the flavour wasn’t as enjoyable as the initial steep. The first resteep had cinnamon and coconut, but the almond and brown sugar notes were (understandably) missing.

My Overall Impression

I liked Dessert by Deb’s Almond Cinnamon Brioche. This black tea blend evokes a lot of feelings of being in a bakery, of getting to experience bites into a pastry rich with almond and cinnamon. I do wish that there were more buttery notes in it, to really drive home that feeling of brioche. That said, I would recommend following the tip of preparing Almond Cinnamon Brioche as a tea latte.

Dessert by Deb’s Peaches & Cream Chai

Peaches & Cream Chai by Dessert by Deb
Black Tea / Flavoured
$6.50 for 25g

Peaches & Cream Chai came to me as part of the bimonthly subscription box from Dessert by Deb.

First Impressions

Peaches & Cream Chai comes in a familiar package. A matte gold pouch came in my bimonthly subscription box, with a colourful label across the front that has the fun polka dots. Peaches & Cream Chai is a part of Dessert by Deb’s Little Country Kitchen Collection.

Peaches & Cream makes me think of a few things. The bicolour corn, for one, and also literally ripe peach slices with a dollop of whipped cream. Just a pleasant little summer time dessert. I will also take strawberries with whipped cream, or blueberries with whipped cream – just saying.

Peaches & Cream Chai consists of organic: black tea, natural peach essence, ginger, peaches, toasted coconut, cardamom, and calendula petals. The dry leaf is nice to look at, and it has a strong aroma to it that is a blend of ginger and peach.

Preparation

Dessert by Deb recommends preparing Peaches & Cream Chai with 212°F (100°C) water and to steep for 5 to 6 minutes, and also included a recommendation to enjoy as a tea latte. I opted to do an initial steep of Peaches & Cream Chai for 5 minutes.

First Taste

Peaches & Cream Chai steeps to a bright orange colour, and has a strong ginger aroma. Mixed in with the fragrance profile is the cardamom, and a light background of peaches. The flavour itself is strongly ginger and cardamom, with the peach and coconut mingling in the background. It’s got a light sweetness to it, and the qualities that I enjoy in a chai (cardamom, primarily).

A Second Cup?

I did attempt to resteep the leaves, but found that the flavour wasn’t as strong as an the initial steep. I would recommend Peaches & Cream Chai for just the initial steep.

My Overall Impression

I loved Dessert by Deb’s Peaches & Cream Chai. The flavour was enjoyable, and the peach flavour adds something quite nice to a traditional chai flavour profile. It has a lot of pep to it, and a nice brightness to my cup. I would have this as a tea latte for sure, as I think that’ll add that ‘cream’ quality for Peaches & Cream.

Dessert by Deb’s Strawberry Cake Roll

Strawberry Cake Roll by Dessert by Deb
Green Tea / Flavoured
$6.50 for 25g

First Impressions

Strawberry Cake Roll is a green tea blend that came in a pale pink metallic pouch that’s sealed and resealable. This blend is part of Dessert by Deb’s Japanese & Asian Patisserie collection. I can’t remember if it came as part of my bimonthly box or not, but I think I purchased it since it’s a 75g pouch versus the usual 25g bag. The colourful polka dot label graces the front of the packaging.

Strawberry Cake Roll consists of organic: green tea, strawberry and papaya pieces, natural strawberry flavour, coconut, Canadian maple, and freeze-dried raspberries. The aroma of Strawberry Cake Roll is very much that of strawberry, with hints of coconut and a touch of sweetness. It really is a beautiful blend though, I really think the varying colours in the blend is a treat – from the yellow, white, red/pink, and green. It’s a visual treat for the eyes.

Preparation

Dessert by Deb recommends steeping Strawberry Cake Roll in 200°F (93°C) water for 4 to 5 minutes. I opted to do an initial steep for 4 minutes.

First Taste

Strawberry Cake Roll steeps to a light yellow. The aroma of Strawberry Cake Roll after steeping is similar to the dry leaf – strawberry/berries, and coconut. The flavour of Strawberry Cake Roll is primarily fruity sweetness, with the emphasis on berries, and the brightness of the coconut throughout. The sweetness isn’t too much, in spite of there being Canadian maple in the blend. I’m actually quite happy that it’s not too sweet, because it does give the option of adding your own sweetener to the teapot.

A Second Cup?

I attempted to resteep Strawberry Cake Roll once, adding an additional 30 seconds for the first resteep. I found that the flavour wasn’t as strong as I would have liked, especially compared to the initial steep that was so flavourful in comparision.

My Overall Impression

I loved Dessert by Deb’s Strawberry Cake Roll. This green tea blend was a treat for the eyes, and the rest of the senses as I got to enjoy it from dry leaf to steeped tea. The light sweetness and fruity flavour from the tea is lovely hot, but I imagine the berries lend itself well to making it into an iced tea, so I’m really looking forward to warmer weather so I can pour this over a cup of ice to enjoy.
